About the Work

False Calm is a large panoramic abstract built around the tension between stillness and movement.

The painting is built from the calm down: soft whites and muted blues, almost quiet, holding fast flashes of ochre, orange and spring green while darker passages add depth and contrast. Mixed media — acrylic, water-miscible oils and oil sticks — layered in expressive marks and texture on canvas.

The name comes from that moment before shift. The surface looks calm, but layers underneath are moving. Something is shifting beneath the calm surface, like water before wind.

This painting is that tension in color, a quiet that is not quiet at all. Warm, energetic and contemplative, not sweet. At 30 x 72 inches — 6 feet wide — it has the presence to anchor a very large wall and works beautifully above a long sofa, credenza, dining table or in a spacious hallway or office.

Perfect For

— Large panoramic art for living room over long sofa or credenza

— Dining room, hallway or office that needs depth and energy

— Collectors of blue, white, ochre and orange abstract paintings

— Warm modern, contemporary, coastal & minimalist interiors
